"All that has black sounds has duende...." Gabriel Garcia Lorca
Sorealist fringe
Out of the Mainstream
The music world is so dominated by 'head sales', the quick hit overnight wonders, it's hard to find the real stars of Sorealist music. But they're out there, and few come with more soreality than Kevin Coyne (see the link below)
A real master of truth, someone who did his last gigs with tubes up his nose and oxygen tanks connected to 30 people in. He almost owns the genre.
But it's no surprise, given the Spanish roots of surrealism, that flamenco is also a key component of the new sorealism...
"The duende, then, is a power, not a work. It is a struggle, not a thought.... The duende is a momentary burst of inspiration, the blush of all that is truly alive, all that performer is creating at a certain moment"
Lorca's description of duende has no better living example than Paco De Lucia, not just some of his solo virtuoso performances, but also when he was found sitting on a chair playing for the sublime and Soreal Camaron De La Isla.
...to be dominated by Myspace and the download charts. The test of Soreal music is in the hearing...
Font runners in the genre could be Wreckless Eric, Paul Simon, Shostakovitch, Lust Faust and Tom Waits. But this is all up for grabs... Are Schubert and Nick Drake too introverted? What about Neil Young and Shostakovitch? Eminem has to be in with a shout doesn't he?
We're not the experts: you are. Why not nominate via the Wiki anyone you think deserves to be a Sorealist Music Laureate and tell us why.
